Recipe for Success Foundation 20th Anniversary: Culinary Legends Reunite
A Revolutionary Partnership That Changed Everything
The Recipe for Success Foundation 20th anniversary celebrates two decades of transformational impact. Twenty years ago, Recipe for Success Foundation Founder and CEO Gracie Cavnar had a revolutionary idea. What if we could change childhood eating habits by teaching kids to cook and grow their own food? However, her vision wasn’t just about nutrition. Instead, it was about creating a movement that would transform how an entire generation relates to food.
That bold experiment required equally bold partners. Among the 24 visionary Houston chefs who answered Gracie’s call in 2005 were two culinary legends. Chef Randy Evans and Chef Pedro Garcia would become the heartbeat of our program. Now, as we celebrate the Recipe for Success Foundation 20th anniversary with the Delicious Alchemy Banquet on November 3, 2025, we’re honored to reunite with these founding Chef Brigade members. They helped shape our Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™ curriculum.
Chef Randy Evans: The Classroom Revolutionary
When Recipe for Success first rolled into MacGregor Elementary in 2006, Chef Randy Evans was there. Furthermore, he never stopped showing up. For nine extraordinary years, Randy appeared in classrooms monthly. Consequently, he transformed the way children thought about food. However, Randy didn’t just teach—he also innovated. Randy developed many of the recipes our students still cook today. Moreover, they embody our core belief that healthy food can be absolutely scrumptious.
“Randy is an extraordinary teacher,” says Gracie Cavnar. “A great chef is not necessarily a great teacher, but Randy has both gifts. Additionally, he’s been an amazing advocate since our beginnings.”
Meanwhile, Randy’s impact extended far beyond the classroom. His commitment took him from New York to the White House. As a result, he spread the word about Houston’s groundbreaking work. His approachable style captivated teachers, volunteers, and students. In addition, he had an amazing ability to make learning joyful. As MacGregor Elementary teacher Terri Zawacki recalls, “He didn’t lecture—he simply talked to them.”
The influence was mutual. For instance, Randy’s time in Recipe for Success gardens inspired him to add a kitchen garden to his own restaurant. Similarly, he used our teaching tools with his own children.
Chef Peter Garcia: The Heart of Hospitality
Chef Pedro Garcia brought something special to Recipe for Success from day one. Specifically, he had unflappable grace and genuine connection with students. As owner of the family-operated El Meson restaurant, Pedro understood the power of food. Furthermore, he knew how it could bring communities together. For nearly a decade, he taught monthly classes at Rodriguez and Gross Elementary Schools. Consequently, he captivated young minds with his passion for cooking.
“I was all over the place cooking with the kids and creating the curriculum, but I enjoyed it,” Garcia recalls. “As chefs, we teach the world how to dine, and hello—this is the beginning, this is it. Year after year I keep coming back because I see it making a difference.”
Subsequently, Pedro’s dedication earned national recognition. In 2010, he joined Gracie at the White House for the Chefs Move to Schools kickoff. There, he represented Recipe for Success on the South Lawn alongside culinary leaders from across the country. As a result, we named him our Chef of the Year at our 2012 Blue Plate Special Café Awards Luncheon.
Recipe for Success Foundation Anniversary: A Legacy Worth Celebrating
These culinary legends are reuniting for Delicious Alchemy 2025 at Hope Farms. However, they’re not just celebrating the Recipe for Success Foundation 20th anniversary. Instead, they’re celebrating a movement that helped inspire Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Campaign. Moreover, it changed the way America thinks about childhood nutrition.
“Chefs are at the heart of everything we do,” says Gracie Cavnar. “Together, we showed the country what’s possible—and now it’s time to do it again.”
The exclusive dinner will feature ten superstar chefs crafting ten exquisite courses. Additionally, each course will pair with curated wines or botanical cocktails. The evening begins with cocktails and sunset bites in the Cavnar Family Foundation Chef’s Garden. Subsequently, this leads to a glittering seated dinner in the United Healthcare Foundation Gathering Barn.
Finally, join us November 3rd as we honor these extraordinary partners. Together, we’ll toast to twenty more years of culinary education that’s changing lives, one child at a time.
