Mission
Over 23 million American children today are obese or already on the path to becoming obese adults with life-threatening chronic diseases. Obesity has many causes, but research identifies the major culprit as the food we eat and the way we eat it. The loss of connection to food sources, reluctance to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and reliance on processed fare are among the key contributors we work to eliminate.
Recipe for Success Foundation was founded in 2005 to combat childhood obesity by changing the way children understand, appreciate, and eat their food, and by educating and mobilizing the community to provide them with healthier diets. We are transforming lives in Houston and beyond by making healthy food fun, tasty, affordable, easy, and accessible.
We created, tested, and produced a comprehensive, evidence-based Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™ program for children, now available to educators across the country as a proven tool to change children’s eating habits and attitudes. We also gamified healthy eating with our VegOut! 30 Ways in 30 Days Challenge to encourage players to simply add more vegetables to their diets.
A critical component in achieving Recipe for Success Foundation’s mission to mobilize the community to provide healthier diets for children, Hope Farms also grows fresh, affordable produce in the midst of a Houston “food desert” while training and providing small-business incubation, co-op services, and workforce readiness for aspiring urban farmers, preparing them to be successful agri-preneurs.
Our urban farm, in the shadow of downtown Houston, is a place for all Houstonians and visitors to our city to learn about and celebrate fresh, locally-grown food.
